How To Layer Your Serums (Without Wasting Product)

A naturopathic guide to skincare order, absorption and how many drops you actually need.
The Short Answer
Apply your serums from thinnest to thickest, water-based before oil-based, and wait roughly sixty seconds between layers so each one has a chance to absorb. Getting the order wrong is the single biggest reason people feel their serums “run off” or “pill” on the skin, and it's also the biggest reason product gets wasted.
Why Order Actually Matters
Every serum is formulated with a specific molecular weight and delivery vehicle in mind. Thinner, water-based formulas (think hydrating or brightening serums) are designed to sit closer to the skin and absorb quickly. Thicker, oil-based or occlusive formulas are designed to sit on top and seal everything in.
Apply them in the wrong order, oil before water, for instance, and the water-based serum simply can't penetrate the oil layer underneath it. It sits on the surface, does very little, and often ends up transferring onto your pillowcase instead of your skin. That's the waste we're talking about, not the product itself, but where it ends up.
The Correct Layering Order
- Cleanse and pat the skin until it's just damp, not soaking wet and not fully dry.
Thinnest, most water-based serum first. Hydrating and brightening actives usually fall here.
- Wait roughly 60 seconds. This is the step most people skip, and it's the one that matters most.
- Treatment or targeted serum next, this is where a plant collagen or actives-forward formula usually sits.
- Thicker, oil-based or occlusive serum last, closest to your moisturiser.
Moisturiser to seal, then SPF in the morning.
If you're only using one serum, none of this applies, just apply as directed. This sequence matters most when you're layering two or more.

How Many Drops You Actually Need
More product doesn't mean more absorption, it usually just means more sitting on the surface unused. As a general guide:
- Face serums: 2 to 3 drops is enough for the full face and neck.
- Eye serums: half a pump or a single drop, gently pressed in with the ring finger.
- Concentrates or boosters: follow the specific guidance on your product, these are usually more potent and formulated for smaller amounts.
- Warming the product between your palms before applying helps it spread further and absorb more evenly, which also means less product used per application over time.
Common Mistakes That Waste Product
- Applying oil-based serums before water-based ones, which blocks absorption of everything layered afterwards.
- Skipping the wait time between layers, causing product to pill, ball up and rub off before it's absorbed.
- Using too much product per application rather than applying a thinner layer more consistently.
- Rubbing serums in vigorously rather than pressing them into the skin, which pushes product off the surface rather than into it.
- Applying serum to fully dry skin. A slightly damp base helps actives absorb more efficiently.
A Note From Our Naturopathic Team
“We formulate every Edible Beauty serum with a specific texture and delivery system in mind, it's not arbitrary. When people ask us why a product isn't performing the way they expected, layering order is very often the answer. It costs nothing to fix, and it changes how effective your whole routine feels.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use two serums at the same time, one on each side of my face?
You can, though for actives that work well together (like a hydrating serum and a plant collagen serum), full-face layering in sequence gives more even, predictable results.
Do I need to wait between every single step, including moisturiser?
A short pause between serums matters most since they're absorbing into the same layer of skin. Moisturiser and SPF can follow shortly after your last serum, no long wait required.
What if my serums don't say which order to use?
As a general rule, water-based and lighter-textured formulas go first, oil-based and richer textures go last. If you're combining Edible Beauty formulas specifically, our customer care team is always happy to recommend an order for your exact routine.
