Why we prefer natural to synthetic Vitamin C
We are often asked why we don't use synthetic Vitamin C in our natural skincare products. Here are a few reasons why we prefer plant-based Vitamin C!
Plant-based C contains C & MORE. Just like our bodies, our skin loves being fed nutrient dense foods in their natural form. Natural Vitamin C found in fruits and botanicals contains not only ascorbic acid (synthetic Vitamin C), but other components like bioflavonoids and enzymes, which help the skin to absorb and use Vitamin C to combat free radical damage, brighten the skin and boost collagen production.
Plant-based C does not oxidise. Synthetic Vitamin C, often in the form of ascorbic acid oxidises very quickly which means that when you take your synthetic Vitamin C out of your serum it may not actually make it onto your skin. Natural Vitamin C is encapsulated in the plant cell walls and is stable when you remove it from your skincare bottle, which ensures you are delivering potent and "live" vitamin C on your skin.
Plant-based C protects the skin from UV damage. Synthetic Vitamin C may also increase UV sensitivity which may trigger pigmentation if you are prone to it. Natural plant based Vitamin C on the other hand comes hand in hand with high levels of antioxidants which work to protect the skin from UV and free radical damage.
